my first trek up north to l.a. was for a dinner at the animal, a restaurant that offered by far the best new-american (unusual) creations. if i had a review for it, it would no doubt be a five-star rating one. (i will make sure to revisit the farm in the near future!). but this post is about father’s office, the ultimate gastropub known for their unique burger and the huge list of californian beer excellence!
since i am a complete airhead when it comes to californian breweries, i asked the bartender for the hoppiest ipa on the menu. the result? ballast point sculpin ipa brewed in san diego, ca. how “notes of peach, mango, and tangerine” and “robustly hoppy” ended up in the same sentence is beyond my knowledge, but this 14-proof american ipa delivered an outstanding burst of flavors without muting the malty-hoppy balance. what an excellent way to start the golden state microbrew expedition.

oh, before i move on too far in this beloved review, i would like to introduce my super-chic, urban chick, l.a. guide of the day, ms. jina lee. jina and i went to school together in ann arbor and now we are both working here in southern california. fortunately for both of us, we know to enjoy the finer things in life, hence jina: the ultimate tour guide. jina asked for an amber ale and the bartender suggested the alaskan brewing amber, (why is this even on the menu?). a decent brew to enjoy in the autumn.
we got there a little early before it opened at 12pm. as soon as the gates opened, everyone just flushed into the restaurant. what i thought unique (annoying rather), about this restaurant was its ordering system. you have to order at the bar and take a number for your food to be delivered. considering the price of the food, i expected a host to sit us down and take our orders. but at the sight of so many elaborate tap handles and knowledgeable bartenders, ordering at the bar was but a mere nuisance.
in addition to the vast selection on tap, there were also guest bottles from belgium and other brew-worthy nations (mostly cask conditioned tripels). although a bit misleading with a description like “a collection of the rarest and finest beers”, f.o. did not fail to display its deepest respect for belgian ales: orval, rochefort, karmeliet, westmalle, etc. (these are easily found in liquor stores).
we ordered some fries and burgers along with our barley goods. the sweet potatoes came first. though these were no pomme frites, they were crispy on the outside and soft and mushy in the inside, just how good fries should be. what i also loved about the fries as well as the burger was the fact that it wasn’t overly seasoned. it was just the perfect amount of seasoning. nothing overwhelming, nothing underwhelming.
“the best burger in town” is definitely an over hype. don’t get me wrong, the burger is juicy, palatable, and well-built with spinach, swiss cheese, and a hint of hickory sauce enclosed in club rolls. it was also perfectly medium-rare as requested.
father’s office, despite the exorbitant pricing ($8 for a pint and $12.50 for the burger), it is definitely worth coming back. for my next sit-in, garlic-pampered shoestring frites and the bone marrow are on my agenda. (arbor brewing company, i have not forgotten about you!).
